A use for the smaller pieces of fabric

Postby Offcuts » Mon Apr 18, 2011 11:09 pm

My friend, Jane Morgan, who runs Notnew bags in Warwickshire, was approached by her friend, who works in a hospice, about the possibility of making fabric bags for syringe drivers that many of their patients use for their medication. I said I would like to see one, with the possibility in mind of Offcuts2 making them with the pieces too small for conventional morsbags. Jane passed one on to me and I made the bag below
Image

It has 2 pockets, each one measures 10x24 inches before sewing and 8x10 inches when made, with a fold at the bottom. The strap is long - 50x3 inches before sewing. They wanted bags with both one and two pockets.

Bet you can guess what they normally use? Yep, plastic bags :o

Offcuts2 have since made 50 of these, which are winging their way to LOROS (Leicestershire Hospice) and Notnew bags are also making them out of their too small pieces. We have put a mini label on them to show they were made by morsbaggers. Here are some that have been made by Offcuts2

This is a super idea - one of the things we can go on to when carrier bags are no longer given away free. (Hurrah when that day comes...)

Hurrah indeed Beattie,
but as you say I don't think we will ever have to give up bag making in one form or another.D

I have more exciting news today. Offcuts member Wendy picked up the 40 syringe driver mini bags today. She lives near LOROS and also visits a relative near me. I telephoned my contact at LOROS and she said she was thinking of me because they had used the last of their bags and were on to plastic bags. She was very pleased that she was getting a batch very soon.

I want to add that this is no way to replace morsbags. As Beattie says we shall be making morsbags until plastic bags are no longer a problem. This is purely an idea for smaller pieces that are left over. Pol and I have had discussions about this and we have agreed that as they replace plastic bags and have a mini morsbag label (also which indicates morsbags support) it is fine.

The guys at Offcuts2 (that includes the managers and offenders) are very pleased to help in this way as a sub project to morsbags.

Brilliant idea. They're very similar to the Wiggly Bags I made for the LIberty Rose Trust, for sick children to keep their lines in. Do you have a pattern at all please, I could make a few of these with my left over bits.
