Fringed morsbag

Postby beattie » Sun Jan 16, 2011 6:08 pm

I have quite a bit of plain, strongly woven material that is just a bit big to make a morsbag. I didn't want to waste scrappy bits by cutting them off, so I thought up a way of using them as decoration. So now some of those bags have a fringe under the handles, on either one, or both sides.

You need a piece of material 18" wide and 42" - 44" long to make a bag the usual size with a fold at the bottom. Start by fringing either or both of the short edges by pulling out the threads that run across the width of the material. Just pull out a few at a time or they snag.

Image

Continue til the fringe is as long as you want it to be.

Image

Fold over the short edge by about three inches - WITH THE WRONG SIDE OUT and press.

Image

Fold the top edge under again, away from the fringe to form an edge to tuck the handle ends under, in the usual way.

Image

Repeat with the other end of the bag if you want both sides fringed, or fold over once, then again, as usual if you want the other side plain.

You then make up the bag in the usual way, tucking the handle ends under the fold of material on the inside of the bag. I finished off the fringe by sewing a line of decorative stitching just above, but this is not essential.

The finished articles -

Don't forget that the top edge of the bag has inside out material between the fringe and the top. It would make an interesting contrast with some material (e.g. denim) and might look unsightly with others, (e.g. printed materials)

Those are just gorgeous - love the fringe - and the groovy shell satin stitching - really gives them class

And very retro, Beattie! You could always thread on beads! Or is that too 'life is too short to stuff a mushroom-esque'! :D

Definitely "too short..." but you can go that step further if you like, Offcuts.
We've got about 160 bags stashed away - made since we sent what we had to Thriftwizard in December. Shall we think about arranging a mass, sychronised give away some time?

I loved that givaway. That was when we bagged a village!

Perhaps we can ask Pol if she has anything in mind.

We went out with Rocbags and bagged Kingsley Village - a rural shopping mall. It was very popular - with us, with rocbags, with Kingsley Village staff and managers, with their customers..... :D We all had fun, and then had lunch in the restaurant. Yum! :D
