Calstock Green Festival

Postby Ivybags » Sun Jun 06, 2010 9:15 am

When I arrived, Offcuts and Mr Grumpy were well in need of an extra pair of hands or two, with the erection of their new gazebo - it was very welcome, as an awful lot of suncream would have been needed:
Image

It was probably the lovliest setting I have ever sewn in:
Image
Its a lovely Cornish village on the banks of the Tamar River, quite near Gunnislake, and the now gone bust Morwellham Quay

Sorry to dissapoint, but the large gong wouldnt fit in my suitcase - but this one competed well with the drumming band
Image

My bobbin winder was great for the round bobbins
Image

This lady was delightful - her shoulders and hands were obviously weak, but that didnt stop her:
Image

This young lady was equally delightful, and very able to sew
Image

I coundt resisit a fishy pic - these were made out of wood from old boats, apparently

Everyone in this little group was pitching in with advice about how this poor man's bag should be made !!! We kept well out of the way needless to say - as he proudly finished it
Image

A pinky purple tutu, stripey leggins, and a wonderful fascinator, which certainly fascinated Mr Beattie (although he pleads otherwise !)

This was just next door to our gazebo:

Offcuts never misses an opportunity to promote Morsbagging - she utilised these youngsters to bag as she spoke:
Image

She went off round the festival armed with loads of bags, catching people as they rested by the river to watch the entertainment:
Image

I'm not sure why, but she looked rather shattered after the event

We all had a well earned rest in the local hostelry before heading back home or B & B
Sorry it was a bit too dark to stop on my way back over Dartmoor to take pics of the gorgeous little baby ponies on the roadside[/img]

The weather changed and the clouds got thicker and darker as Mr B and I drove slowly - there were end-of-half-term traffic jams to enjoy - up through Cornwall to Calstock on the border with England. We wished we'd packed our waterproofs and were glad the morsbags jackets were in the car, but when we arrived we found that Offcuts and Ivybags already had the gazebo up on the green in front of the village hall and had turned the sun back on - at least part time. 8)

Offcuts' new gazebo is a miracle of modern engineering and folds down into a handy carry bag as well!

Lots of children made their own bags - and I feel much happier about them using hand cranks than I do if they're using electric machines.

Image

This chap in the blue checked shirt made a bag, with the help of his friends, and between them came up with a new method of joining side seams that amused Mr B. I don't know where they came from - their accents were foreign - I wish I'd asked, as we could call it the "Lithuanian seam" or whatever.

Image

We all commented on this girl's "hat on a hairband" fascinator

Image

- and red tights and purple tutu :D

We all had a super day out on the green and would love to be asked back next year. :D
There are people in the village interested in starting their own pod, which would be marvellous.
And our handcranks got an airing!
Altogether 32 bags were made on 6 old machines.

Not bad for a lot of old crocks - and the sewing machines held up well too. :D
Make a bag - you know you want to!

What fantastic picutres, thank you very much ivybags and beattie for sharing them.

It certainly looks like a successfull day was had by all - I love the pic of the large group of people on the riverbank holding their bags aloft.

The girl with the fascinator looks like she enjoyed making her bag...what a great outfit.

The big question is ... did Offcuts ride the unicycle pictured next to her on the seat?

Fab pics, Ivybags and Beattie, thank you for taking and posting them. As Ivybags said I can't resist a pr opportunity! I sort of feel at a large event it's not possible or practical to have enough bags for everyone but at least most people there will know about morsbags and hopefully have a look at the website.

Leading on from that, the 13th picture of Ivybag's batch, where I bagged about 15 people sitting by the river with a little 'flash bagging' they all very kindly held up their bags for Ivybags to take a pic of that moment in time. The man at the back in the middle is a marine biology academic at Plymouth Uni who came up for a chat afterwards. He was v. Interested in the morsbags concept and thought there might be a future joint opportunity. Pol I shall pass on his details. :D

Brilliant pics - what a great day you had and it looks like lots of people will have got the message

I think I feel a lot happier with people using hand cranks than electric - so much easier as well - although they are heavy!

and none of the old crocks rubbish - you put us to shame with all that you all do! roll on retirement that's what I say (or more likely redundancy in this day and age.....)

Hugs to all

Well, it is recycling after all
The thought of Mr Sazzie on a unicycle fills me with admiration - my son had one, and was brilliant, but i didnt even dare try
