Vintage Deckchair Morsbag (and others)

Postby Waley » Fri Jun 17, 2011 10:53 am

As promised, here is a pic of my newly made Morsbag, made from authentic vintage deckchair fabric!

Image

This is true recycling at its best as the deckchair was one of six I got from a lady on Freecycle. Two are useable, the others need the fabric replacing so rather than throw away the heavy duty cotton, I have washed it and turned it into a Morsbag which will make an ideal beach bag!

It is a bit weather beaten but lovely thick cotton and I think it adds to the vintage charm!

I've got another one to make up - look out for another pic soon

While I'm on, here are my other first few Morsbags. The following two were made with fabric from Offcuts (and a little help from her too!):

Vintage Laura Ashley floral

Pink Dinosaurs (very unusual!)

And here's one I made from some fab vintage 60s curtains which were donated by a lady at my knitting group - very Austin Powers!!

Groovy Baby!

Fingers crossed the photos work  (They are medium 640, hope that's not too big!

Well, you've cracked the avatar problem and licked uploading pics, Waley! Well done. :D
I love the avatar, covet your fish on that lovely blue background, and admire the gorgeous bags you've made already. Did you have trouble with the thick deckchair material? We were given some and it was a nightmare to sew, especially sewing the handles into the "up" position. We've since found that if you're strugging with thick material you can use the thick stuff for the body and sheeting or similar for the handles.
Can't help smiling at the "sunset dinosaurs" :D

There is a bit of a machine/needle story involving me but I'll let Waley tell it!

I actually made the deckchair one on my John Lewis mini machine! It coped with the thick fabric perfectly but has since struggled with doing the thicker bits on other bag handles so Offcuts has kindly lent me a solid old Bernina to keep going with.

Thanks for the comments about the door and fish (thought it was appropriate with my name and pod name!) - they are on my little beach hut style shed (which was also recycled - given to me by Dad's cousin with fish hook thing attached!). My avatar is me as a Mad Men character! I found it on someone else's blog and had to do it - just Google 'Mad Men Yourself' and have fun :)

And as Waley likes the vintage fabric which are often thicker fabrics I suggested she had a jeans needle on permanantly. I don't think it would do any harm to sew normal cottons with a jeans needle. I don't tend to have many thicker fabrics to sew as Mary Scissorhands doesn't like cutting them out because she get a sore thumb!

Mad Men Yourself was good for a giggle, Waley. :D I enjoyed "Trying on" the outfits. Do you know the song "Waley, waley"? We used to sing it at school.

Looking it up for you, I discovered that most people call it "Waly, waly". Near enough, anyway!
