Morsbags' fifth birthday

Postby beattie » Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:35 am

Morsbags will be five years old on 14th January! :D In that time, thousands of morsbaggers have made an amazing number of bags. In fact, today, at this moment, the global tally reads 102045.

I've carried out some investigations and calculated that, if all those morsbags were placed one on top of the other they would make a pile 306 metres high. And that is the height of "The Shard" in London.

So, just for fun, how many morsbags do you think will be on the tally at midnight GMT at the end of 14th January 2012?

Please post your guesses or estimates here.

Another little factoid for you - if all the morsbags made were laid side by side they'd reach from London to Paris (257 miles). What a good job some of the bags are waterproof!

Those are amazing facts, Beattie!

There is a slight complication with the numbers that I have mentioned before. There are about 1700 of Offcuts2's bags waiting to go on the tally and they may or may not be on there by the fifth birthday.

I'm getting the feeling I would be wise to stay out of this, but how about 102415 as a guess ( offcuts 2 not withstanding)

F
Or something like that anyway........

Having checked my figures, I find that I've had a decimal point problem - as so many do - and that hypothetical line of bags laid side by side would "only" stretch 25.75 miles, not 257.5 as stated above. :(
So with the revised figures they would reach from London to Meopham - which I picked as it's on the way to Paris via the Channel Tunnel. Sorry it's not as exciting as I'd led you to believe... :?

My guess will be 102500 excluding OC2s fantastic efforts (104200 inc. OC2).

Assuming my maths is correct, 5 years = 1825 days - 13 to today = 1812.
102045 / 1812 = ~56.3 bags a day potentially replacing ~28150 plastic bags.

Based on these facts, the total on the 14th including OC2s should be in the region of 104477 !!

:D A complete guess 102480 Love the pictures Beattie, Oh that naughty decimal point has got me in trouble too. I once calculated the number of hexagons our W I needed to make a patchwork quilt. We'd already started making it when I realised that we needed ten times as many  . We were sewing for 2 years, I've never lived it down. :D

I'm so glad it isn't just me! I'm sure it was a masterpiece when you'd finished it off, Tintin.

I think we'd better have a closing date for this game, or the winner will be the person who submits their guess on the morning of 14th Jan.
Deadline for guesses is 11pm Friday 6th - OK?

Good call, Beattie (I don't think Offcuts2's bags will be on by Friday!)
