What to do with the leftover bits

Postby selby baggers » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:22 pm

I love recycling fullstop. This is the main reason why I morsbag. BUT...

I would love to know what people do with the leftover bits of fabric that are too small to make into morsbags. Possibly a taboo subject for some but one that definately needs some clarification as I see it recycling is the name of the game no matter the title.

We have heard about draught excluders which is also a very green idea. But what else can be done with those offcuts? (not you Rosie lol )

I have quite a bit of leftover fabric that are too small for bags and even handles, so what can be done with these?

I thought of patchwork bags but am finding these are very time consuming and at present not enough time to do so.

Sazzie mentioned some napkin rings made from the rings of tetrapack bottles I think.. Please post the method Sazzie as its a pearler.

Has anyone got any other ideas that they can share.

I just keep thinking can we chose to do other things recycle wise with the offcuts as it makes sense that we use up every bit of fabric that we have so nothing makes it to landfill.

What do others think? And if so what else can be made?

I understand what you're saying about the patchwork stuff, SB. It's very time consuming to make. We're lucky that our council will collect the scraps with the other recycling. When it's a dry recycling day & I've got a (plastic, sorry  but it should be kept dry) bagful and I remember.. I put it out for collection. Even the small bits can be shredded and turned into shoddy - and some of the morsbag T shirts are made of that. The fabric is really good - much better than you'd expect with a name like that! :D
Make a bag - you know you want to!

I would suggest donating them to primary schools for use for collages etc. This could be okayed with Skopos

Another idea would be to bag it up and donate it to a charity shop/shops
for them to sell for shoddy. The charity shop would receive £2-£4 a bag.
My patchwork group saves all their bits and donates them to a Lukeamia charity shop. Maybe we could do something with the MCS - I think they are a registered charity and we already have strong links with them. This would also need to be agreed with Skopos

We are an important enviromental group and I think that all decisions should reflect this

I think we need to come up with a plan that Skopos agree to as there will probably at a guess 5% waste (SB, Sazzie and Chris - how much waste do you think there would be from what we saw today?)

I plan to use the leftovers to make some toys for our cats, and either stuff them with catnip or the really titchy scraps of fabric.

I'm LOLing here.
I've just reread my post, and I want to reassure everyone, that it's the toys I will be stuffing, NOT the cats!
SB - I'll have to crack on with the toys, as we are hoping to get another little kitty soon.

Bunting? I've been cutting small spare pieces into triangles for a few months (pre Skopos) and have now sewn them onto some tape and the scraps have then gone into my recycling bag to go for shoddy. hopefully will be able to put some up on Saturday.

have thought about making some very small fake bags with the bonded morsbags letters on to peg up for bunting/signage after seeing Christie's bunting.

That is bunting-tastic but there was some where the little triangles were little bags.

Sorry - just had another thought for the bigger bits and pieces FREECYCLE

SB - I am more than happy to take any amount of your unusable-for- bags bits and put them on Freecycle. I'll put it in morsbags made of the blackout material. I'm sure Skopos would approve

Leftovers

Postby angebags » Thu Aug 13, 2009 8:46 am

You could sew some scraps together and braid them into placemats or a rug.

Or just latch hook them onto canvas for rugs or wallhangings.

Also just cut the scraps into tiny pieces to use for filling for small toys and dolls - this is NOT suitable however for toys for young children as they could be a fire or choking hazard.
