umbrella bags

Postby hamchick » Thu Jul 30, 2009 4:46 pm

On holiday in Wales, our big umbrella died. Welsh weather was too much for it. I took off the nylon fabric and washed it, and measured out that I could make 2 nylon bags out of it. It's the right fabric to make a stuff bag- I mean,a bag to fold up inside itself. This are my next bags! Has anyone tried this already? How about it Morsbaggers?:D

Hi Hamchick, nice to hear from you!
Ivybags made bags like these a little while ago out of offcuts of balloon material, see -

and

Using umbrella fabric is inspired! Fantastic recycling idea! I'd love to see some pictures of the results. Sorry about your washout Welsh experience. I've sworn never to go back to the Black Mountains after two such holidays. :(

great idea - there must be quite a few redundant brollies lying around, as rain and gales together dont go well with brollies !!!!

Here in Cornwall it's only holidaymakers who try to use umbrellas. Locals don't bother with them - for obvious reasons.

Umbrella bags

Postby hamchick » Fri Jul 31, 2009 1:01 pm

Eyeing up curtains reminds me of the Sound of Music Singalong, where folks wave a piece of curtain material and shout "Look behind you" at Maria when she is desperate for fabric. Anyway I have finally ordered a better sewing machine and will try to get my husband to take some photos to post when I get going!

LOVE this idea - how come nobody thought of this before? - excellent Hamchick! There are frequent London Transport lost property auctions where you can bid for a batch of 30 homeless brollies for tuppence - I have visions of the boat filling with umbrellas, as well as t shirts now!!

I think an umbrella for a bag is fantastic. It's a great idea and you get to save money and recycle. Good for you!

I've made a skirt out of an old umbrella, it was pretty easy, and I left the metal ends in at the bottom all the way around to weight the skirt down :)
